Ecosystems, Economics, and Government
As humans strive to live
in a world increasingly stressed by our activities, decisions, and made
every day that either add to or lessen the stress. In large measure the
decisions are economic ones, driven not by a concern for the environment
but by the demands of individuals, businesses, and governments in the
economic marketplace. If we are to preserve our environment, we must
seek new approaches that take into account the future costs of the harm
being done to the world ecosystem in the name of economic development.
At present in the United States, a framework of laws governs the degree
to which industry is permitted to affect the, environment. These laws
and their enforcement, although imperfect, have had a generally positive
effect in the direction of protecting and improving the condition of the
environment.
