Land Resources and Conservation
Land has multiple uses and
benefits. Natural areas-wilderness, forests, grasslands, and
wetlands-provide many essential environmental services. These include
controlling soil erosion, protecting water quality, regulating water
flow in rivers and streams, and providing wildlife habitat. Human uses
of land include harvesting timber, grazing livestock, growing crops, and
building cities. Unfortunately, human activities sometimes degrade land
to the point where it cannot provide essential environmental services.
Two extremely serious land problems are removal of forest, or
deforestation and expansion of deserts, or desertification. In this
chapter we examine the importance of land resources, and the various
ways in which land is put to use.
