Ecosystems of the World
Climate, particularly
temperature and precipitation, influences the distribution of the
Earth's organisms. In each major kind of climate a distinctive type of
vegetation develops. For example, desert plants are associated with arid
climates, grasses with semiarid climates, and forests with moist
climates. Certain animals and other kinds of organisms are associated
with each major type of vegetation. The major terrestrial (land)
ecosystems, called biomes, extend over large geographical areas. In like
manner, certain aquatic organisms are characteristically assembled in
each of the Earth's major aquatic ecosystems.
