Renewable Energy and Conservation
Alternative energy sources
are become increasingly important, both because they are renewable and
because there use generally has less environmental impact than the use
of fossil fuel or nuclear power. The most promising alternative energy
technologies utilize the sun’s energy. Direct solar energy can be used
to heat water, heat buildings, and generate electricity; biomass, wind
and hydropower are all examples of indirect solar energy. Currently, the
most important nonsolar renewable energy source is geothermal energy,
the heat of the sun. In addition, tides, ocean currents, and salinity
gradients have the potential to provide energy.
