Sex Determination

The most common mechanism of sex determination in nematodes is that of XO-XX type. That males, in this system, have atleast one chromosome less than the females. Bpigenetic factors may also control production of ma| e.1 It is also possible that because of over crowding in the populations or lack of available nutrients there may be more males produced than females.

Eggs. Nematode eggs are generally ovoid but may vary in shape. The eggs have three membranous layers : (1) the external protein layer secreted from the uterine wall ; (2) a chitinous membrane secreted from the egg itself; and (3) a vitelline membrane. Egg surface may be smooth (as in most of the plant parasitic nematodes) or may bear various specialized structures (as in some animal

nematodes).
